L'IL-22 est une cytokine produite les lymphocytes qui agit uniquement sur les cellules épithéliales des tissus de barrière comme la peau, les poumons et l’intestin. Au-delà de ses actions durant l'inflammation comme le renforcement de l’intégrité de la barrière épithéliale et l’induction des peptides antimicrobiens, l’IL-22 joue un rôle constitutif important dans le maintien de l'homéostasie intestinale. L’IL-22 possède un récepteur soluble inhibiteur appelé IL-22-binding protein (IL-22BP).
