Cognition, semiotics and normativity : genesis and stakes of the concept of ecology of mind in Gregory Bateson

Des travaux de Gregory Bateson on aura retenu le concept d'écologie de l'esprit grâce au succès du recueil d'articles publié en 1972, Steps to an ecology of Mind. Souvent qualifiée d'hétérodoxe, l'œuvre de Bateson semble déjouer les circonscriptions disciplinaires en mobilisant tour à tour la cybernétique, l'interactionnisme, l'éthologie, le behaviorisme voire la génétique. Néanmoins, par-delà cet aspect hétéroclite, il est possible d'identifier l'unité d'un projet théorique qui s'enracine dans les problèmes des écoles anthropologiques britannique, française et américaine de la première moitié du XXe siècle. Ce travail de thèse s'efforce ainsi de reconstituer la genèse du concept d'écologie de l'esprit en replaçant la trajectoire intellectuelle de Bateson dans les coordonnées disciplinaires de l'anthropologie. En restituant, dans un premier temps, les lignes de fracture qui organisent les débats de cette discipline dans les années 1920 et 1930, ces recherches mettent en lumière une filiation dominante qui va de Durkheim, Radcliffe-Brown à Bateson et se traduit par l'importance théorique accordée au phénomène de la normativité. Comme le montre ensuite une lecture étroite de Naven, il apparaît que l'intérêt de Bateson pour les normes ne le conduit néanmoins pas tant à élaborer une anthropologie sociale, entendue comme science quasi-juridique des coutumes, qu'à formuler le projet d'une anthropologie cognitive tendant à assimiler les phénomènes culturels à un environnement sémiotique. S'appuyant également sur certains aspects des travaux de Malinowski, de Haddon, de Bartlett, de Benedict et de Mead, Bateson élabore une théorie de la culture indissociable d'une certaine conception de l'esprit sur laquelle se penche le dernier moment de ce travail. En effet, les travaux ultérieurs de Bateson, s'échelonnant jusqu'aux années 1970, attestent d'un intérêt désormais compréhensible pour l'éthologie, la psychologie expérimentale, la sémiotique ou encore la notion d'Umwelt de Von Uexküll qui lui permettent de développer les concepts nécessaires à une analytique de la communication sociale non-verbale. En insistant sur la capacité spontanée des organismes, et particulièrement des animaux, à vivre dans un milieu sémiotique aussi signifiant qu'omniprésent, Bateson montre que l'interaction sociale et la cognition culturelle humaines constituent une version singulière et hautement complexe d'une écologie de l'esprit dont les traits les plus généraux s'enracinent toutefois dans le phénoménisme et la « grâce » des montages psycho-physiologiques réflexes d'une vie animale dénuée de réflexivité.Published in 1972 by Gregory Bateson, the best selling book Steps to an Ecology of Mind popularized both its author and the concept of « ecology of mind ». Albeit widely famous, the latter is nonetheless most of the times not clearly understood. Regularly considered as heterodox, Bateson's works appears to break through the boundaries of traditional fields of social sciences as it deals with cybernetics, interactionism, ethology, behaviorism, genetics even. But in spite of its piecemeal aspect, a closer look at Bateson's work brings to light the underlying unity of a theoretical scheme rooted rooted in the British, French and American anthropological studies of the first half of the 20th century. This dissertation traces back the genesis of the concept of “ecology of mind” by replacing Bateson's researches into their seminal anthropological framework. In mapping the foundational state of the debates which shaped the fields of ethnography, ethnology, sociology and anthropology during the 1920's and the 1930's, it contends that Bateson's work is strongly connected, through A. R. Radcliffe-Brown influence, to É. Durkheim's work. This intellectual descent explains the importance of normativity in Bateson's thought. However, a close reading of Naven (1936) shows that Bateson's interest in norms does not lead him to work as a social anthropologist, as Radcliffe-Brown did, but to draw the basis of a cognitive anthropology in which cultural facts are understood as a semiotic milieu. The last moment of this thesis demonstrates that Bateson's new theory of mind is based on the previous works of B. Malinowski, A. C. Haddon, F. Bartlett, R. Benedict and M. Mead but also on a growing interest for new fields of research such as animal ethology, experimental psychology and semiotics. The insights provided by these different fields, along with the concept of Umwelt coined by J. Von Uexküll, enable Bateson to elaborate sound conceptual tools for the analysis of non-verbal aspects of social communication.
