Les volcans de magmas riches en silice peuvent présenter deux types principaux de dynamisme éruptif : effusif (croissance de dôme de lave) ou explosif (éruptions vulcaniennes ou pliniennes). L’explosivité d’une éruption est principalement contrôlée par la capacité du magma à relâcher ou à conserver ses gaz, i.e. à développer une porosité plus ou moins connectée. Le seuil de percolation des gaz dans un magma est principalement contrôlé par des paramètres intrinsèques, tels que la fraction de bulles et de cristaux et la viscosité du magma, mais aussi par des paramètres extrinsèques tels que la vitesse d’ascension et de déformation du magma.
