Contrasted views on the preservation of digital art : perspectives, expectations and disciplinary fields in action

L’art numérique dépend fortement de notre environnement technologique, qui, soumis à l’obsolescence, impose à ces œuvres une existence courte et fragile, et met en péril la constitution d’un patrimoine artistique numérique. Si cette obsolescence technologique inquiète le milieu patrimonial, ce sont également les notions de processus, de performance et d’expérience interactive du public qui obligent ce dernier à repenser ses méthodes de préservation, traditionnellement construites sur la notion d’objet. Depuis les années deux mille, la communauté muséale se penche sur ces nombreux questionnements et mobilise autour d’elle différents acteurs des domaines de l’art, de l’informatique, de l’archéologie des média, etc. Bien que les avis et opinions divergent quant à la bonne manière de préserver ces œuvres, une forte majorité entend désormais leur préservation par leur variabilité au fil du temps. Cependant, cette approche ouvre à de nombreuses interprétations, le devenir de l’œuvre d’art numérique semble alors pouvoir prendre diverses directions. Cette thèse se veut mettre en perspective et confronter les points de vue de ces différents acteurs, à travers les initiatives menées sur le sujet. Elle souhaite également contribuer aux efforts menés par cette communauté transdisciplinaire, puisqu’elle repose sur le projet de recherche « Art numérique et postérité » du Labex ARTS-H2H, qui réunit les expertises de la Bibliothèque nationale de France, de l’équipe de recherche-création INREV et du Living Art Lab. Cette recherche a permis d’élaborer un système descriptif des œuvres d’art numérique interactives, dans le but de soutenir leur préservation. Conçu à partir d’œuvres provenant des corpus de ces trois partenaires, ce système prend également en compte leurs attentes et reflète leurs différentes manières de les appréhender. Elle se positionne ainsi à la croisée et à la rencontre des domaines patrimoniaux, de la recherche et de la création artistique.Digital art is highly dependent on a technological environment whose future obsolescence implies a brief and uncertain existence for digital artworks, and puts in jeopardy the creation of a digital art heritage. While this situation is a concern for those working in the field of heritage, the ideas of process, of performance and of interactive experiences relating to these artworks also require them to rethink traditional preservation methods, built around the concept of the « object ». Since the beginning of the century, the museum community has sought answers to these questions and has enlisted the help of multiple stakeholders in the fields of digital art, computer science and media archaeology. Although there are differing views and opinions regarding the right way to preserve these artworks, a majority agrees that art’s preservation should be considered in terms of variability over time. This approach is open to many interpretations, and the future of digital artworks can therefore follow various directions. This thesis aims to put into perspective and compare the different points of view, by examining initiatives carried out on the subject. The aim of this thesis is also to contribute to the efforts of this interdisciplinary community, as it is based on the research project « Digital art and posterity » from the Labex ARTS-H2H which brings together the expertise of the French National Library (Bibliothèque nationale de France – BnF), the INREV laboratory and the Living Art Lab. This research led to the development of a descriptive model for interactive digital artworks, in order to support their preservation. This system is based on corpora of artworks from the collections of the three partners. It also considers the partners' expectations and reflects their different ways of understanding these artworks. This research is therefore at the junction of the worlds of heritage, research and artistic creation
