Exposure to biocides in indoor environments : metrology, prevalence and dynamics of emissions

Les isothiazolinones sont des substances biocides utilisées pour leurs propriétés algicides, fongicides et bactéricides dans de nombreux produits de construction et de consommation, comme les produits d’entretien, les peintures ou les cosmétiques. Cependant, malgré leur utilisation fréquente, elles peuvent provoquer des réactions allergiques chez les utilisateurs, comme des eczémas ou œdèmes par contact cutané et inhalation. Dans la littérature, il existe peu d’études sur la mesure des émissions d’isothiazolinones dans l'air intérieur. L’objectif principal de cette thèse a été de développer une méthode robuste et sensible pour caractériser 7 isothiazolinones à la fois dans la composition et dans les émissions des produits de construction et de consommation par :- le développement d’une méthode instrumentale pour d’identifier et de quantifier simultanément 7 isothiazolinones- la mise au point d’un protocole d’extraction pour caractériser leur présence dans les produits de construction et de consommation - l’optimisation d’un protocole pour quantifier les émissions dans l’air intérieur utilisant des µ-chambres d’essai d’émissions. Cette nouvelle méthodologie analytique a été utilisée pour caractériser la composition et les émissions de 10 produits de construction et de consommation courante (peinture, assainisseurs d'air et produits cosmétiques). Les teneurs en isothiazolinones mesurées dans la composition des produits sélectionnés ont été majoritairement en accord avec les déclarations de compositions faites par les fabricants. A l’aide des micro-chambres d’essai, les émissions de MIT, CMI, BIT, OIT et DCOIT des 10 produits sélectionnés ont été caractérisées.Isothiazolinones are biocides used for their algicidal, fungicidal, and bactericidal properties in a wide range of building and consumer products (cleaning products, paints, cosmetic products). They can cause allergic reactions, such as eczema or oedema by dermal contact or inhalation.There are few studies available in the literature on the quantification of isothiazolinone emissions into indoor air. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis was to develop a robust and sensitive method to characterize the isothiazolinones both present in the composition and the emission of building and consumer products. Three methodological developments took place: - the development of an instrumental method to identify and quantify 7 selected isothiazolinones, - the optimization of an extraction protocol to determine the isothiazolinones composition of the building and consumer products, - the optimization of a protocol to quantify the emissions of the 7 isothiazolinones into indoor air. Ten building and consumer products (paint, air fresheners, and cosmetics) were selected to test the efficiency of the 3 developments. The isothiazolinones incorporated in the composition of the mentioned products were successfully identified by the developed method. The obtained results showed that the concentrations of isothiazolinones were mostly in agreement with the declarations of the manufacturers.Moreover, to characterize the emissions of isothiazolinones from the 10 products, a measurement method based on the use of the micro-chambers was developed. Using this optimized protocol, the air emissions of MIT, CMI, BIT, OIT, and DCOIT were quantified for the 10 selected products
