At the origins of the modern garden : professional, aesthetic and ideological tensions in the art of gardens in France (1867-1914)

Cette thèse consacrée à l’art des jardins en France entre 1867 et 1914 s’intéresse à un moment de bascule où l’on assiste notamment au retour en vogue du jardin régulier. Celui-ci, loin de se limiter à un changement de goût, résulte de la conjugaison de plusieurs phénomènes aux dimensions tant stylistique qu’idéologique, professionnelle ou disciplinaire. Parmi les mécanismes alors à l’œuvre dans ce mouvement de modernisation, on observe une multiplication des publications, l’écriture d’une histoire, l’institutionnalisation de la discipline, l’émergence d’une profession dotée d’un enseignement spécifique et l’apparition d’une communauté d’amateurs. Cette étude met donc en lumière la complexité et la richesse d’une période méconnue de l’histoire des jardins ainsi que les tensions qui la caractérisent : l’autonomisation de l’art des jardins vis-à-vis de l’architecture et de l’horticulture, la dialectique entre tradition et modernité et entre nationalisme idéologique et internationalisation. L’analyse de textes et de projets et de leur interrelation offre l’occasion d’examiner la façon dont les premiers agissent comme un laboratoire de forme pour les seconds. Ce doctorat met également en contexte le cas français avec les réformes jardinistes contemporaines en Angleterre, en Allemagne et en Autriche, plus particulièrement dans le cadre de leur relation avec la modernisation de l’habitat domestique au croisement de l’architecture, des arts décoratifs et de l’art des jardins.This thesis, devoted to garden design in France between 1867 and 1914, focuses on a turning point in which the formal garden came back into vogue. This turning point, far from being limited to a change in taste, results from of a combination of several phenomena of stylistic, ideological, professional and disciplinary dimensions. Among the mechanisms at work in this modernization movement, we observe a multiplication of publications, the writing of a history, the institutionalization of the discipline, the emergence of a profession with specific teaching and the appearance of a community of amateurs. Therefore, this study highlights the complexity and richness of a little-known period in garden history, as well as the tensions that characterize it: the autonomization of the art of gardens from architecture and horticulture, the dialectic between tradition and modernity and between ideological nationalism and internationalization. The analysis of texts and projects and their interrelationship provides an opportunity to examine how the former act as a laboratory of form for the latter. This dissertation also contextualizes the French case with contemporary garden reforms in England, Germany, and Austria, specifically in their relationship to the modernization of the domestic habitat at the intersection of architecture, decorative arts, and garden design
