Listening the architecture : digital tools and ambient design, the way of sound.

Cette thèse de doctorat en architecture s'inscrit dans le champ des recherches sur les phénomènes sensibles et les environnements vécus menées par le laboratoire AAU et l'équipe CRESSON depuis plusieurs années. Ce travail a plus spécifiquement pour objet l'étude de l'espace sonore en tant que paramètre de l'environnement physique et de la qualité de vie des espaces qui y sont associés. Ainsi, partant de l'espace sonore, nous avons tenté d'élargir les interrogations induites par la prise en compte des phénomènes physiques afin d'y faire rentrer d'autres considérations tout aussi importantes pour la qualité des espaces vécus - à travers le lien social, la notion d'intimité, les rapports de perception proches et lointaines ou plus largement l'enjeu de l'expérience subjective, toujours en relation avec le contexte environnant.Nous avons pour objectif de tester dans quelle mesure le son peut être un médium approprié à une prise en compte plus large des ambiances dans la conception architecturale en favorisant une posture -au sens propre comme au sens figuré- du concepteur. Ceci lui confère une autre relation avec l'environnement projeté en décadrant son rapport au projet. Le développement d'un outil numérique et les interrogations que cela suscite nous pousseront également à envisager l'apparition des nouveaux outils de conception et d'évaluation numériques dans l'environnement du concepteur spatial comme un élément potentiel de redéfinition des modes de projet en renouvelant une réflexion sur la qualité des ambiances et des espaces vécus.Pour cela, nous avons développé un logiciel appelé "EsquisSons" permettant d'esquisser l'environnement sonore. Il a été testé à travers des expérimentations en contexte qui ont pris la forme d'ateliers ou d'expériences impliquées. Cela nous a permis de parcourir et de questionner le processus du projet architectural de la conception jusqu'à l'évaluation à travers le prisme du sonore et de l'outil numérique "en acte" ce qui se traduit par les questions suivantes : Comment le son peut-il être associé à un ou des vecteurs particuliers de prise en compte des espaces vécus au-delà des évaluations quantitatives acoustiques traditionnelles ? et : Quels peuvent-être la place et le potentiel de l'outil numérique dans une perspective de prise en compte des ambiances dans le projet architectural ?Nous avons choisi de répondre à ces questions à travers l'observation de trois corpus, tous associés à l'outil. C'est l'outil lui-même qui constitue le premier corpus, il s'agit d'analyser et d'expliciter ses évolutions du début à la fin de la recherche. Le second corpus est constitué des observations menées lors des ateliers et des productions des participants. Le troisième et dernier corpus regroupe les autres expériences que nous avons pu mener avec EsquisSons en dehors des ateliers et qui nous sont apparues pertinentes pour appuyer nos observations.Les différents temps de progression du développement de l'outil, à travers les questionnements, les améliorations, les ajouts dont il a fait l'objet, ainsi que l'analyse des observations menées concernant son utilisation nous ont permis de tester nos hypothèses et de montrer le potentiel, mais aussi les limites des outils numériques et du sonore pour la conception architecturale dans une perspective sensible.This PhD thesis in architecture is part of the research on sensitive phenomena and lived environments conducted by the AAU laboratory and the CRESSON team for several years. More specifically, this work aims to study sound in space as a parameter of the physical environment and the quality of life in spaces. Thus, starting from the sound in space, we have attempted to broaden the questions raised by taking into account physical phenomena in order to include other considerations that are equally important for the quality of the spaces experienced - through the social link, the notion of intimacy, the relationship between close and distant perceptions or, more broadly, the issue of subjective experience, always in relation to the surrounding context.Our aim is to test how sound can be an appropriate medium for a broader consideration of ambiences in architectural design by promoting a posture - literally and figuratively - for the designer. This provides the designer with a different relationship with the projected environment by shifting the focus.The development of a digital tool and the questions that it raises will also lead us to consider the emergence of new digital design and evaluation tools in the environment of the spatial designer as a potential element for redefining the modes of project by renewing a reflection on the quality of the ambiences and the spaces experienced.To this end, we have developed a software called "EsquisSons" to sketch the sound environment. It was tested through experiments in context, which took the form of workshops or involved experiments. This allowed us to explore and question the process of the architectural project from conception to evaluation through the prism of sound and the digital tool "in act" which translates into the following questions: How can sound be associated with one or more particular vectors of consideration of lived spaces beyond traditional quantitative acoustic evaluations? and : What can be the place and the potential of the digital tool in a perspective of considering ambiences in the architectural project?We have chosen to answer these questions through the observation of three corpuses, all associated with the tool. The first corpus is the tool itself, and the aim is to analyse and explain its evolution from the beginning to the end of the research. The second corpus is based on the observations made during the workshops and the participants' productions. The third and final corpus is composed of the other experiences that we were able to carry out with EsquisSons outside the workshops and that appeared to be relevant to support our observations.The different phases of the tool's construction, through questioning, improvements and additions, as well as the analysis of observations made during its use, allowed us to test our hypotheses and to show the potential, but also the limits of digital tools and sound for architectural design from a sensitive perspective
