La bio-électrochimie microbienne concerne l’étude des transferts d’électrons entre des micro-organismes vivants comme les bactéries et des électrodes. On distingue au sein de ces transferts d’électrons deux catégories : les transferts de type anodique où l’organisme réduit la surface de l’électrode et les transferts de type cathodique où l’électrode est oxydée par l’organisme. Parmi les biofilms microbiens cathodiques certaines bactéries catalysent la réduction des nitrates.
