A la croisée de l’histoire politique et de l’histoire des concepts, cette thèse aborde l’évolution de la conception du passé indigène au Mexique, d’abord enraciné dans les mythes de l’unité nationale, mais réinterprété, depuis la fin des années 1960, d’après le discours politique de la mémoire historique. Afin expliquer cette transformation, j’ai procédé en trois temps. Pour la période 1968-1980, je montre comment une nouvelle génération d’anthropologues a forgé une théorie sur le continuum de l’ethnocide pour qualifier le passé des indigènes depuis la conquête du XVIe siècle et jusqu’au présent.
