Nationalism and Internationalism in the Greek Workers Movement, from World War I to the Civil War (1946-49). The Case of Trotskyism

En Grèce, où le mouvement ouvrier organisé est très jeune dans l’entre-deux-guerres, l’opposition internationale entre stalinisme et trotskysme prend une dimension particulière avec la question nationale macédonienne. Le Parti communiste (KKE) revendique en 1924 l’indépendance pour la Macédoine, mais le dirigeant du KKE (Pouliopoulos) qui a fait adopter ce mot d’ordre y renonce en 1926. Exclu du parti, il se rapproche du trotskysme. Un autre courant, l’archiomarxisme, est reconnu en 1930-1931 par Trotsky, malgré son opposition à l’autodétermination du peuple macédonien que soutient Trotsky. Le clivage entre trotskystes et staliniens sur la question macédonienne est complexe, la ligne du KKE étant changeante. Le trotskysme grec est, à son apogée au début des années 1930, le principal groupe trotskyste européen hors d’URSS et rivalise avec le KKE. Quand Trotsky appelle en 1933 à une IVe Internationale, cela ouvre une période de scissions et regroupements chez ses partisans grecs. Incapables de clarifier leurs divergences politiques, ils nient l’oppression nationale pendant l’Occupation puis refusent d’appeler au retrait des troupes britanniques. Ce travail retrace l’histoire du trotskysme grec à partir de la presse de gauche, des documents de congrès et des archives des trotskystes grecs, et de sources internationales. Il montre les contradictions entre les vues de Lénine et Trotsky sur la question nationale et celles des trotskystes grecs. La difficulté à résoudre les problèmes théoriques et pratiques soulevés par la question nationale en Grèce est une raison du déclin des trotskystes grecs, malgré une percée à la fin des années 1920.In Greece, where the organized workers movement was still very young in the inter-war period, the international opposition between Stalinism and Trotskyism had a particular dimension with the Macedonian national question. In 1924 the Communist Party (KKE) demanded independence for Macedonia, but the KKE leader (Pouliopoulos) behind this position’s adoption went on to renounce it in 1926. Expelled, he moved towards Trotskyism. In 1930-31, another current, Archiomarxism, was recognized by Trotsky despite its opposition to self-determination for the Macedonian people which Trotsky upheld. The divide between Trotskyists and Stalinists on the Macedonian question was complex as the KKE line fluctuated. Greek Trotskyism, at its height in the early 1930’s, was the main Trotskyist group in Europe outside of the USSR, rivalling the KKE for influence. When Trotsky called for a Fourth International in 1933, this opened a period of splits and fusions among his Greek supporters. The Greek Trotskyists, unable to clarify political differences, denied national oppression during the Occupation, and later refused to call for withdrawal of British troops. This work describes this history drawing from the left press, congress documents and the archives of Greek Trotskyists as well as international sources. It shows the contradictions between Lenin and Trotsky’s views on the national question and those of the Greek Trotskyists. Despite their breakthrough in the 1920s, the difficulty to solve the theoretical and practical problems raised by the national question in Greece, was one reason for their decline
