Christianity played an important role in the literary developments that followed Japan’s reopening to the Western world. A significant number of Meiji writers converted to the faith, mostly to Protestantism; and a similar surge of conversions took place after the end of the Pacific War, this time mainly to Catholicism. Japanese studies around the world has lagged behind in the study of these events. This article provides an overview of the state of scholarship in the Anglophone academic community, calling for a clear distinction between the individual contributions of Protestantism and Catholicism to developments in Japanese literature across the WWII divide.I 世界の日本研究レポー
