In sub-Saharan Africa, fake medicines (or falsified medical products) are of major public health concern. They do not only impact patients, but also public authorities and pharmaceutical companies. This impact is countered by the pharmaceutical industry through tools from product protection to public awareness campaigns. Our study aimed at defining and describing fake medicines on how it is embedded in its regional environment, the scale of traffic, its organization and global impact. We also wanted to highlight some uncertainties concerning the available data. Furthermore, we described the different tools used by pharmaceutical companies to counter this phenomenon and tried to classify them while pointing out limitations of such strategies...
