International audienceSaer IV de Quincy, an anglo-scottish baron married to the co-heiress of the earldom of Leicester, became earl of Winchester in 1207. Saer de Quincy, one of the 25 barons of the Magna Carta in 1215, owned six seals. His first coat of arms was engraved on four of those seals. The equestrian great seal was also bearing his cousin’s blazon. Once he became earl of Winchester, Saer IV used a double-sided great seal showing his new coat of arms: an equestrian on the obverse, a fight against a lion on the reverse. The styles of those seal images may be compared to other aristocrats’ seals. In some cases, it might be the production of a same engraver.
