Evaluation of Sex Crıterıa on the Basis of Pelvic Bone Radiological Imaging in Modern Anatolian Populations

Sex estimation plays an important role in positive identification, which is especially important in terms of guiding the solution of forensic cases. It is known that the pelvis is used for sex estimation due to the prominent sexual dimorphism on the pelvis. In this context, in order to predict sex, 24 anthroposcopic evaluations were made and 23 osteometric measurements were taken on the pelvis. These measurements were taken over the pelvic openings, os coxae and sacrum. Due to the need for current data of the society at the point of enlightening forensic events, this study aims to reach information about the modern Anatolian society and to create an index with this information. In line with the targeted purposes, in this study, the patients who were included in the radiological observation database of the Akdeniz University Medical Faculty Hospital between July - November 2019 were randomly selected from among those who met the research criteria. Anthroposcopic evaluations and anthropometric measurements were carried out on pelvic CT images of 120 women and 120 men in total. Results were obtained by performing Paired Sample and Independent Sample T Test, Correlation Analysis and Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA) with the help of IBM SPSS Statistics 22 program. According to the results, statistically significant differences were observed in the majority of measurements (19/23) taken over the pelvic openings, os coxa and sacrum between women and men, and this was interpreted as an indicator of sexual dimorphism. The sexes of 86% of men and 85% of women were correctly predicted with the right ischiopubic index. With the left ischiopubic index, 84% of men and 83% of women were correctly predicted. According to the DFA results, the variable with the highest explanation rate in the sex estimation in the coxae was found to be the height of the coxa. The results of the analyzes were compared with other studies in the literature, and their similarities and differences were noted.Özellikle adli vakaların çözümünde yol gösterici olması bakımından mühim olan pozitif kimliklendirmenin gerçekleştirilebilmesinde cinsiyetin belirlenmesi için yapılan tahminler önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Pelvisin, seksüel dimorfizmi belirgin bir biçimde göstermesi sebebiyle cinsiyet tahmininde kullanıldığı bilinmektedir. Bu bağlamda, bu çalışmada cinsiyet tahmininde bulunabilmek amacıyla pelvis üzerinde 24 antroposkopik değerlendirme yapılmış ve pelvik açıklıklar, os coxae ve sacrum üzerinden 23 osteometrik ölçüm alınmıştır. Adli olayların aydınlatılması noktasında toplumun güncel verilerine ihtiyaç duyulması nedeniyle bu araştırmada modern Anadolu toplumuna ilişkin bilgilere ulaşmak ve indeks oluşturmak amaçlanmıştır. Hedeflenen amaçlar doğrultusunda bu araştırmada, Temmuz–Kasım 2019 tarihleri arasında Akdeniz Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Hastanesi’ne ait radyolojik gözlem veri tabanında yer alan hastalardan araştırma kriterlerine uygun olan kişiler arasından rastgele seçilmiş toplam 120 kadına ve 120 erkeğe ait pelvik BT görüntülemeleri üzerinden antroposkopik değerlendirmeler ve antropometrik ölçümler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Elde edilen veriler IBM SPSS Statistics 22 programı yardımı ile Eşleştirilmiş Örneklem ve Bağımsız Örneklem T Testi, Korelasyon Analizi ve Diskriminant Fonksiyon Analizi (DFA) gerçekleştirilerek bulgular elde edilmiştir. Bulgulardan elde edilen sonuçlara göre, kadınlar ve erkekler arasında pelvik açıklıklar, os coxa ve sacrum üzerinden alınan ölçümlerin büyük çoğunluğunda (19/23) istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılıklar gözlemlenmiş ve bu durum seksüel dimorfizmin bir göstergesi olarak yorumlanmıştır. Araştırmanın bulgularından elde edilen ischiopubic indeks sonuçlarına göre; sağ ischiopubic indeks ile erkeklerin %86’sının, kadınların %85’inin, sol ischiopubic indeks ile erkeklerin %84’ünün kadınların %83’ünün cinsiyetleri doğru tahmin edilmiştir. Gerçekleştirilen DFA sonuçlarına göre coxae’de cinsiyet tahminindeki açıklama oranı en yüksek olan değişken coxa yüksekliği olarak bulunmuştur. Gerçekleştirilen analizlerin sonuçları literatürde yer alan diğer araştırmalarla karşılaştırılmış, benzerlikleri ve farklılıklarına dikkat çekilmiştir
