Wind-assisted propulsion is seen as one of the main alternatives to potentially achieve large emission reductions in shipping. However, wind-assisted propulsion introduces new challenges in the design, retrofitting and performance prediction as well as the performance analysis. This paper presents and compares methods to predict the performance of wind-assisted propulsion, using the validated performance prediction model ShipCLEAN. Focus is put on evaluating the difference between 1 degree of freedom (1 DOF) and 4 DOF methods as well as the impact of aerodynamic interaction effects in between multiple sails.
