The lifting of the cloud bank due to climate change in the Monteverde cloud forest has already caused discernible effects on the dry season mist regime. Epiphytes, including the most prevalent family of epiphytes, Orchidaceae, may serve as a useful indicator group of climate change. This study sought to fill the gap in knowledge about orchidaceous epiphytes and climate change by testing the response of the pleurothallid orchids Platystele microtatantha and Specklinia aristata to supplemental mist treatments simulating 1970s mist frequencies.
