International audienceThis article deals with Schumann’s review for the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung in 1831, which presents Chopin as a genius and offers a poetic commentary on his Variations for piano and orchestra on Mozart’s “Là ci darem la mano” op. 2 and Schumann’s Variations on Chopin’s nocturne op. 15/3. With his “musical prose”, Schumann offers an unprecedented and innovative form of musical criticism, which clearly claims his poetry and the power of emotions in opposition to a presumed rationality. Visual and sonic evocations intermingle there.
