The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare MRI with liver biopsy as a tool for identification and quantification of liver iron overload in patients with sickle cell anemia using blood transfusions. We compared the results of the baseline serum ferritin in the absence of acute complications, the estimated liver iron concentration by magnetic resonance imaging and semiquantitative determination of iron in a fragment of liver tissue obtained by percutaneous biopsy.
