Using an Earth image database (Space Shuttle images), students try to find places on Earth where there is ice and snow. In some arid areas, water can come from snow and ice found on nearby high mountains or at extreme latitudes. In this activity, students can express ideas about where there is ice on the Earth and why. They also can find Web images of Earth and download them to determine ways to distinguish areas of ice/snow from clouds or other white features on the images of Earth. In addition, students can use world maps to mark places where they find ice, putting in place names and/or coordinates where possible. Educational levels: High school, Middle school
