Knowledge of medical students of the federal university of Sergipe on the human papillomavirus and its attitudes towards the vaccine

PURPOSE. Identify the level of knowledge of medical students about human papillomavirus (HPV) and their attitudes towards HPV vaccine. METHODS. It was conducted an observational, cross-sectional descriptive study composed of 208 medical students of the Federal University of Sergipe between August and December 2012. The study included female medical students who agreed to participate. Data were collected through a questionnaire developed by the authors. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 17.0 and EpiInfo (version 6.0). P values were calculated using the chi-square (X2). RESULTS. The majority of students referred know HPV (93.8%) and 65.4% obtained information with university professor. One hundred and eighty- four (88.5%) reported that infection with HPV is a sexually transmitted disease. The majority (85.6%) have heard about the HPV vaccine, primarily by university professors (43.8%). Otherwise more than half (87.5%) were not vaccinated, and the main reason was the high cost, but 89.9% of respondents would accept immunize themselves. There was statistical significance between phase of the course of the student and knowledge of HPV (p = 0.003), the association of HPV a sexually transmitted disease (p = 0.045) and use of the vaccine (p = 0.009). There was not correlation between the vaccine and family income (p = 0.201). CONCLUSION. Knowledge about HPV was high among medical students and attitudes toward vaccine was positive, despite the low rate of use of it due to cost.OBJETIVO. Identificar o nível de conhecimento das estudantes de medicina sobre o papilomavírus humano (HPV) e suas atitudes em relação à vacina anti-HPV. MÉTODOS. Foi realizado um estudo observacional, transversal e descritivo composto por 208 estudantes de medicina da Universidade Federal de Sergipe no período de Agosto a Dezembro de 2012. Foram incluídas estudantes do gênero feminino, que cursassem medicina e aceitassem participar do estudo. Os dados foram coletados por meio de questionário elaborado pelos autores. A análise estatística foi realizada através do programa SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) versão 17.0 e o EpiInfo (versão 6.0).Os valores de p foram calculados utilizando o teste do Qui-quadrado (X2). RESULTADOS. A maioria das alunas (93,8%) referiu saber o que é HPV, sendo que 65,4% obtiveram a informação com professor da universidade. A maior parte (88,5%) afirmou que a infecção pelo HPV é uma doença sexualmente transmissível. A maioria (85,6%) já ouviu falar sobre a vacina anti-HPV, principalmente pelos professores universitários (43,8%). No entanto, mais da metade (87,5%) não foi vacinada, sendo que o principal motivo foi o alto custo. A maioria das entrevistadas (89,9%) aceitaria imunizar-se. Houve significância estatística entre fase do curso em que a estudante se encontrava e conhecimento do HPV (p=0,003), associação do HPV a uma doença sexualmente transmissível (p=0,045) e uso da vacina (p= 0,009). Não houve correlação entre o uso da vacina e a renda familiar (p=0,201). CONCLUSÃO. O conhecimento sobre HPV foi elevado em estudantes de Medicina e a atitude em relação à vacina foi positiva, apesar da baixa taxa de uso da mesma devido ao custo.Aracaju-(SE
