One of the deepest and most ancient lakes in the world, Lake Baikal is situated in the south of Eastern Siberia. Its age and complicated evolutionary history make it home to a wide variety of plants and animals. This site describes ecological problems, climatic conditions, geology, and cultural aspects of the region, and includes detailed maps and photographs.
