COMPASS: optimised co-modal passenger transport for reducing carbon emissions – Final results and Conclusions.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARYThe motivation and the general objectives of the COMPASS project are deeply rooted in the EuropeanTransport Policy (ETP) in the first decade of the 21st Century, with a look towards the new challengesof the incoming second decade of the century. In particular, three topics must be stressed:Ø Challenges from the key socio-economic trends.Ø Challenges from environmental concerns.Ø Challenges from technological changes.Taking this into account, the general objectives of the COMPASS project were:Ø To provide an overall picture of the future travellers needs in the light of the key socio-economictrends;Ø To analyse how ICT and ITS applications can meet the new demands, favouring the integration ofmultimodal transport solutions;Ø To assess how these solutions can contribute to the de-carbonisation of transport activities.In such a framework, the following collateral and important objectives were also addressed:Ø The potentials of the ICT and ITS applications to provide behavioural data and information toimprove travel surveys and fostering harmonisation;Ø The validation of the ICT solutions with stakeholders rooted in the national contexts, due to theinvolvement in the project of TTS Italia, member of the ERTICO National Network of ITSAssociations.This final project report summarises the work carried out in the project and the findings from theproject deliverables
