Cloud for Arte in Nuvola, Rome

Cloud is a site specific commission created by Goetz in response to the glass panelled façade of the Fuksas building. His characteristic multi-coloured lozenge shapes appear to float amidst the rectangular grid system, in perfect symmetry with the geometry of the panes of glass. An important aspect of Lothar’s public projects is not only his response to the history and function of the architecture, but also the fact that these are temporary, fleeting installations, to be experienced like a performance. The title Cloud refers to the buildings’ incredible architectural feature from which the fair also takes its name, but by using the hallowed colour spectrum it reminds us that storms give way to sunshine and of course rainbows. This is in fact an artwork in two parts - both outside and inside - as the semi-transparent vinyl material creates a shimmering light work inspired by stained glass windows in churches. The effect is transcendental and awe-inspiring, yet immaterial as it changes according to the light. Goetz has ingeniously translated an abstract idea into the reality of a space, creating an immersive fusion of light, colour and space in flux that conveys a poignant message of hope and fragility
