The purpose of this doctoral dissertation is twofold: (1) to contribute to a better comprehension of the processes implied in the egocentric perception of a visual object in gravitational earth space, and (2) to study the role of the egocentric reference in the visualperception of the direction of gravity. Data from a first set of experiments showed that only roll body tilts induced errors in the visual localization and orientation of body midline. However, the deviation was in the direction opposite to body tilt for the localization task suggesting the implication of the vestibulo-ocular reflex, whereas the deviation was in the direction of body tilt for of the orientation task suggesting the implication of the tactile somaesthetic.
