We present a centralized estimator for wireless sensor networks subject to communication costs. The target is to find an optimal send-on-delta threshold to trade-off between estimation performance and communication rate. The estimation performance is computed by using a Kalman filtering algorithm with data fusion. The average communication rate is calculated in an analytic form in terms of the threshold. We illustrate the results via a numerical example
