Aufgrund der hohen Aufarbeitungskosten ist die Herstellung von niedrigpreisigen Produkten aus Mikroalgen zum aktuellen Zeitpunkt nicht rentabel. Eine Möglichkeit zur Reduzierung der Aufarbeitungskosten stellt das Verfahren der in situ-Extraktion (Milking) von Mikroalgen dar, bei dem das von den Algenzellen in das umgebende Medium sekretierte Wertprodukt direkt während der Kultivierung abgetrennt wird, ohne die Zellen zu zerstören. Dadurch können die energieintensiven Schritte der Ernte, Trocknung und des Zellaufschlusses der herkömmlichen Prozesskette eingespart werden.
