The purpose of this study was to examine the impact that that choice in assessments has on student understanding when finishing a language arts unit in sixth grade. Student understanding was measured through a rubric that all participants had and through the journaling of the researcher. While the average score between the different groups was not drastic, the group without choice scored slightly higher. At the same time, the groups with choice were on task more often and created a unique classroom atmosphere. The results showed both groups had their own positive outcomes
