Interview with Carl Russell Long

This interview was conducted by Dr. George Garrison with Carl Russell Long with a focus on the History of Emmett Scott High School. Emmett Scott was the segregated high school for African-Americans, which was named after Emmett Scott, a former aide to Booker T. Washington and President Woodrow Wilson. The school opened in 1920 and was closed in 1970 when full integration was implemented in Rock Hill, SC schools. Carl Russell Long (1935-2015) was a Rock Hill, SC native growing up in the Boyd Hill area and attended Emmett Scott High School. He would go on to a professional baseball league career in the Negro Leagues from 1951 through the late 1950s. He played with such legends as Willie Mays, Satchell Page, Charlie Pride, Hank Aaron, and Buck O’Neal. After baseball, he became the first black Deputy Sheriff in Lenoir County and first detective for the City of Kinson. He would also become the first black Trailways bus driver in Eastern, NC.
