A simple yet instructive experiment suitable for class demonstration in the first thermodynamics course is reported. The experiment is designed to determine the power consumption and the second law efficiency of an electric hair dryer. The equipment required would be readily available in any mechanical engineering department. This demonstration complements the lecture material on the first and second laws of thermodynamics
