Upon priming with Candida albicans or with the fungal cell wall component β-glucan, monocytes respond with an increased cytokine production upon restimulation, a phenomenon termed trained immunity. In contrast, the prestimulation of monocytes with lipopolysaccharide has long been known to induce tolerance.
