The Inclusion of Work in Social Determinant of Health Screening Tools: A Scoping Review

In the past decade, research about the use of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) screening tools in the primary care setting has found that SDOH screening positively impacts health outcomes. Research about the content of these screening tools has also found that few screening tools assess for multiple domains of SDOH and work is often overlooked as a SDOH. To examine this further, the objective of this scoping review is to determine what degree work is included in SDOH assessment tools implemented in the primary care setting. This scoping review found that in SDOH screening tools, employment status is the only major component of work that is assessed. Other components of work such as job, occupation and working conditions are not frequently assessed. More research is needed about how work can be better assessed as well as what specific questions should be included in SDOH screening tools.Bachelor of Scienc
