With alternate sources of aid, recipient countries have more options and seemingly more decision-making authority. Prior research has found that to compete with other donors, established donors have changed their approach. The thesis presents an updated understanding of China’s effect on World Bank conditionality. World Bank project loans to Sub-Saharan Africa as well as Chinese development assistance to the region were analyzed to determine if a change in World Bank conditionality occurred from the time frame of 2008-2019. The results show an indeterminate relationship between Chinese development assistance and the number of prior actions in a World Bank project loan.
