A PROGRAM EVALUATION OF ROUTINE DEPRESSION SCREENING OF ADULTS BETWEEN AGES 18-65 IN PRIMARY CARE

ABSTRACT Karen Keisler: A Program Evaluation of Routine Depression Screening of Adults Between Ages 18-65 in Primary Care (Under the direction of Leslie Sharpe) Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders in the United States (U.S.) and can result in severe impairments that interfere with one’s ability to carry out major life activities (National Center for Health Statistics [NCHS], 2012). The prevalence of depression is increasing, estimated at 50% since 1990 (Chow, et al., 2019). It is recommended by the United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) to provide routine depression screening in the general adult population, with adequate systems in place to ensure effective treatment and appropriate follow up (Siu & USPSTF, 2016). Primary care practices with such depression screening programs in place have shown to have positive outcomes and increase quality of life (Picardi, et al., 2016; Siniscalchi, et al., 2020). Despite the evidence, many primary care practices have low rates of depression screening. There are many barriers that can impede the integration of routine depression screening and management in primary care (Akincigil & Matthews, 2017). Many depression screening programs are also impacted by provider lack of knowledge of appropriate screening, treatment, and resources (Akincigil & Matthews, 2017; Schumann, et al., 2012).
