A descriptive analysis of fluoridation bills submitted to the General Court of Massachusetts between the years 1969 and 1980

Today there are still active opponents to fluoridation who have been successful in impeding or altogether halting the progress of fluoridation in certain communities in Massachusetts. This study was conducted in order to answer the following questions: 1. Have any trends developed in the legislature concerning the issue of fluoridation within the past 10 years in Massachusetts? 2. If trends have developed, what are they and can any conclusions be drawn from this study as to how to further the progress of fluoridation in the future? 3. What are the controversies and problems of having a health measure voted on by lay people? The purpose of this study was to formulate a descriptive analysis of the majority of bills concerning fluoridation submitted to the Massachusetts General Court and to chart any trends found in this legislation between the years 1969 and 1980. It was hypothesized that: Trends have developed within the past decade in the legislation concerning fluoridation that will be useful in determining actions to be taken to promote future fluoridation in Massachusetts
