The goal of the current study is to throw light on a rather neglected part of Icelandic literary and cultural history: Imagery in early Icelandic hymn poetry. More specifically, it is an investigation into the poet Ólafur Jónsson á Söndum’s (c1560–1627) use of imagery. Martin Luther’s thoughts on language and use of linguistic figures or imagery (chapter 4) are taken as a starting point for the analysis. With this historical point of departure the aim is twofold: firstly to provide an account of the theology of Ólafur Jónsson as seen through the imagery.
