In the northern Great Plains, optimum fall establishment is critical for winter survival of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The length of the coleoptile (protective sheath that covers the shoot during emergence) has been associated with fall stand establishment, most notably with semidwarf wheat cultivars that possess the Rhtl and/or Rht2 dwarfing genes.
