Determinants of the value of football players: an application of the hedonic pricing method

This work aims to identify, by means of the Ordinary Least Squares regressions based on the hedonic pricing model, the weight of each of the determinants of the market value of the football players used and in what magnitude this eventual influence occurs. The work also seeks to contribute to the expansion of works dealing with football in the South American and especially Brazilian scientific circles. For this, a sample containing market values of 5,350 players from the five main leagues in the world (Spanish, English, French, Italian and German) and from four more national championships (Brazilian, Argentine, American and Chinese) is used, based on data from the 2017/18 season, available on the Transfermarkt website. The hedonic price method is used, because it calculates price indices controlled by the characteristics of the goods. It should be noted that the analyzes carried out in this investigation show that all the selected variables had a statistically significant impact on the market value of the players, serving the purpose of identifying the players' performance variables that are determinants of their market value. In addition, it is shown that, in the world football scenario, Brazil occupies a secondary role in relation to the countries and clubs considered to be main, both in relevance and in average market value.Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)Este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar, por meio de regressões por Mínimos Quadrados Ordinários baseadas no modelo de precificação hedônica, o peso de cada um dos determinantes do valor de mercado dos jogadores de futebol utilizados e em que magnitude se dá essa eventual influência. O trabalho busca também contribuir com a expansão das obras que tratam sobre futebol no meio científico sul-americano e especialmente, brasileiro. Para isso utiliza-se uma amostra contendo valores de mercado dos 5.350 jogadores das cinco principais ligas do mundo (espanhola, inglesa, francesa, italiana e alemã) e de mais quatro campeonatos nacionais (brasileiro, argentino, estadunidense e chinês) a partir de dados da temporada 2017/18, disponíveis no site Transfermarkt. O uso do método dos preços hedônicos dá-se, pois este calcula índices de preços controlados pelas características dos bens. Registra-se que as análises realizadas nesta investigação demonstram que todas as variáveis selecionadas tiveram impacto estatisticamente significativo sobre o valor de mercado dos jogadores, de modo que a mesma pode servir ao propósito de identificação das variáveis de performance dos jogadores são determinantes sobre o valor de mercado dos mesmos.
