It is currently estimated that there are 54 million people living with dementia in the world, and that there will be 130 million people living with the condition by 2050 (Alzheimer’s Society, 2020). In the United Kingdom alone there are around 850,000 people living with a formal diagnosis of dementia, and it is estimated that around a quarter of patients in UK hospitals have some form of dementia. (Alzheimer’s Society, 2009). There is a clear need to support the emotional care of patients living with dementia alongside their medical care in order to reduce the negative impact that hospital ward environments can have on their wellbeing.
