Property and family strategies in the Alps : the Regis of Saint-Vincent.

International audienceThis paper examines the relationships between the various branches of a kin group in the Valdostano community of Saint-Vincent in the late sixteenth century. The most prominent member of the Regis clan was Vincent Regis, who served as secretary and then treasurer of the valley estates from the 1550s until his death in the early 1580s. Historiographic models concerning patron-client ties between regional elites and local supporters would lead one to suspect that Vincent had constructed a dense network of reciprocal relationships in Saint-Vincent, especially among the numerous other Regis families who resided there. While marriage ties did link Vincent to other notable families in the community, his connections to other Regis were minimal. This seems to have been due, in part at least, to the geographic configuratino of his landed assets with respect to those of other members of the Regis clan. While the evidence examined (tax records, feudal reconnaissances, property exchanges, and other notarial records) does not indicate that a shared patronym automatically guaranteed local political support, it does point to the important role played by women in mediating property relations in Saint-Vincent.Dans cet article on examine les relations entre les diverses branches d'une parentèle de la communauté de Saint-Vincent (Vallée d'Aoste) à la fin du seizième siècle. Le membre plus connu du clan Regis était Vincent Regis, secrétaire et ensuite trésorier des états de la vallées des année 1550 jusqu'à sa mort (ca. 1584). Les modèles historiographiques par rapport aux liens de clientélisme entre les élites régionales et leurs fidèles locaux nous feraient attendre à ce que Vincent ait pu construire un réseau de soutien dense de relations réciproques, surtout avec les nombreuses autres familles Regis qui y résidaient. Pourtant, même s'il y eut des liens matrimoniaux entre Vincent et des autres familles notables de la communauté, ses rapports avec les autres Regis étaient minimes. Cela avait pour cause, en partie au moins, la configuration géographique de ses propriétés par rapport aux autres membres du clan Regis.
