Factors influencing the performance of innovation contests

Innovatiecompetities (“innovation contests”) zijn een populair mechanisme om gekwalificeerde oplossingen voor innovatieproblemen te realiseren en hebben veel aandacht gekregen van de academische wereld. Er blijven echter uitdagingen bestaan voor vraagstellers (“seekers”; organisaties die voor een innovatieprobleem hulp van externe experts zoeken), zoals; hoe ontwerp je deze competities, hoe formuleer je de probleemvraag, hoe trek je aandacht van oplossers (“solvers”) en hoe modelleer je het proces. Dit proefschrift bouwt een raamwerk om het proces te onderzoeken. Met behulp van twee datasets van een bekend online platform voor designproblemen, wordt vervolgens empirisch het effect van de probleemvraag en de diversiteit van de oplossers op de competitie-uitkomsten onderzocht. Hoofdstuk 2 laat zien dat de leesbaarheid en de lengte van de probleemvraag het aantal hoge-kwaliteit en lage-kwaliteit oplossers beïnvloeden en uiteindelijk ook de competitie-uitkomsten. Hoofdstuk 3 vindt een omgekeerde U-vorm relatie tussen de verscheidenheid van de oplossers en de competitie-uitkomsten en een negatief, dalend effect van de onzekerheid van de probleemvragen over dit niet-lineaire effect. Hoofdstuk 4 laat zien dat de kans dat de oplossers zich bij de competitie aansluiten en kwalitatief hoogwaardige oplossingen indienen wordt beïnvloed door het cumulatieve aantal oplossers en het cumulatieve aantal hoogwaardige oplossingen. Dit proefschrift analyseert drie manieren waarop de competitie-uitkomsten kan worden beïnvloed. Er ontstaan zodoende nieuwe inzichten in het verbeteren van de competitie-uitkomsten door het adequaat formuleren van de probleemvragen, het proactief beheren van de diversiteit onder oplossers en het adequaat scoren van de ingediende oplossingen.Innovation contests have become a popular mechanism of generating qualified solutions to innovation problems, and they have gained much attention from academia. However, a number of questions for seekers (organizations looking for help from external experts (solvers) to solve innovation problems) remain, for example: how to design contests, how to formulate briefs, how to attract solvers, and how to model the contest process. This dissertation builds a framework to examine the contest process. Using two datasets from a well-known online platform for design tasks, this thesis empirically determines the effect of briefs and the diversity of solvers on the contest performance. Chapter 2 shows that the readability and the length of briefs influence the number of high-skilled and low-skilled solvers, and finally the contest performance. Chapter 3 reveals an in-verted U-shape relationship between the diversity of solvers and the contest perfor-mance, and a moderating effect of the uncertainty of briefs on this nonlinear effect. Chapter 4 demonstrates that the probability of solvers joining the contest and submitting high-quality solutions can be affected by the cumulative number of solvers and the cu-mulative number of high-quality solutions. Thus, this thesis explores three ways by which the contest performance can be affected, and derives new insights of how to im-prove the contest performance by adequately formulating briefs, proactively managing the diversity level among solvers, and properly scoring the candidate solutions
