Silicone rubber is used for a wide variety of biomedical and industrial applications due to its good mechanical properties, combined with a hydrophobic surface. Frequently, however, it is desirable to alter the surface hydrophobicity of silicone rubber. Often this is done by plasma treatments but the effects are usually transient. In this study, surfaces of medical grade silicone rubber have been repeatedly modified by means of oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, and ammonia RF plasma treatments with a 24 h time interval in between treatments.
