During low temperature hardening enhanced levels of glutathione (GSH) are generally observed in plant shoots and are often related to the development of freezing tolerance. The present communication shows that there is no direct relation between an increased GSH content and freezing tolerance of leaves, and little supporting evidence for the function of GSH as a protectant against freezing-induced injury.</p
