The location of multiple reflections or “glitches” is given by a general expression, from which the glitch maps of KAP(100), beryl(1010), alpha-quartz(1010), InSb(111), Ge(111) and Si(111) are derived. A proper choice for the azimuthal orientation of these crystals leads to a large glitch-free region at the low-energy side of the monochromator range. The behaviour of the glitch structure as a function of the beam divergence and the heat load of synchrotron radiation is analyzed
