Previous research regarding the effect of highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) on pregnancy outcomes shows conflicting results and is predominantly situated in developed countries. Recently, HAART is rapidly being scaled up in developing countries for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT).
