Most employees are under- or overpaid relative to their country's level of wealth. This 58-nation study makes a case for more temperate - less cold or hot - climate as a root of a more mastery-oriented culture, which in turn is associated with wealth-referenced overpayment. Overpayment is larger in poorer countries that also have a more temperate climate, a more mastery-oriented culture, or both. Supplementary examination of 25 rival predictors corroborated the conclusions.</p
