Differences in social integration among ethnic groups: description and explanation In the Netherlands little quantitative research has been done on the social integration of ethnic minority groups. In this contribution we look at the social integration of the four biggest ethnic minority groups in the Netherlands (Turks, Moroccans, Surinamese and Antilleans). The operationalisation of social integration refers to the magnitude of informal contacts the ethnic groups have with autochthonous, Dutch friends. First, we describe the degree of social integration of the four ethnic groups. Second we try to explain the differences in the degree of social integration between these groups. Crosssectional data collected in 1994 show that Antilleans have the most contacts with the Dutch, then the Surinamese, then the Turkish and finally the Moroccans who have the fewest contacts with the Dutch. Poor language skills explain the differences in social contacts to some extent. Other explanations for the differences in social contacts are educational level, the generation of migration, and the place of residence
