A theory of magnetic Compton scattering is formulated. The cross section is found to be insensitive to orbital effects, in agreement with recent experiments on transition-metal and rare-earth ferromagnets. When the transferred energy is sufficiently small to generate substantial corrections to the impulse approximation, the sensitivity to orbital moments of ordinary nonresonant magnetic scattering is recovered.</p
