Background: Abnormal neuronal activity contributes to symptoms of allergic asthma, where increased cholinergic tone is observed. Neurotrophins such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) are target-derived neuronal growth factors and increasingly recognized as important in asthma.
