In dit artikel laten zien op welke manier het beeld van de vrije natuur veranderde, van iets gevaarlijks en onnuttigs dat in cultuur moet worden gebracht, tot iets dat ook de moeite van het bewaren waard is vanwege zingeving, schoonheid of nut. En we verkennen hoe natuurbescherming door particuliere organisaties en de overheid tegemoet werd getreden.
