The high comorbidity rates among mental disorders indicate that these disorders are strictly discrete entities and that the disorder diagnostic classifications do not reflect the natural way in which mental disorders occur. The observed patterns of comorbidity are considered to reflect the actual underlying structure of psychopathology and investigating the latent structure is important to gain knowledge that can be used for the development of evidence-based classifications of mental disorders
